Our favourite brands on NET SUSTAIN
On the sofa, glass of wine, 8pm, if there was one place we love to scroll it’d be NET SUSTAIN. The covetable edit from NET-A-PORTER.COM of sustainable fashion and beauty, a little browse is like riffling through your dream closet. Taking in brands with credentials from considered materials and a commitment on waste, to locally made and strict fair-trade principals, it’s one of the swiftest ways to find pieces that look good but are made even better. We’ve pulled out our four favourite brands in the edit…
BITE Studios
BITE Studios is a minimalist daydream. A collaboration between four founders in Stockholm and London, the results are effortless, wear-forever pieces but with a directional touch. From gorgeously oversized shirts, to precision, waterfall tailoring and fluid, dawn-to-dusk dresses, this is everything you need to go back to the office with aplomb. With a fervent commitment to sustainability, 95% of the materials used are from natural organics, sustainable or recycled fibres. Think organic silk and linen, alongside newer materials like rose petal fibres and bio-vegetable leather made from corn starch. This season the brand has launched a BUY BACK-scheme where the label will purchase any item back for 20% of its original value, and reform it for the BITE ARCHIVE – making a truly circular business. An acronym of By Independent Thinkers for the Environment, it spells out everything we want, for sure.
MaisonCléo
We would say mum’s the word as we literally want the whole of this brand ourselves – but alas, we’re too late. Word has got around about this undeniably lovely label founded by Marie Dewet and her mother, Nathalie – nicknamed Cléo. Handmaking every piece to order from their French workshop, the brand only use exquisite deadstock fabrics that would have otherwise gone to waste. Each garment is named after a woman in their family, and as Cléo in her youth always matched her outfit with her scrunchie, every order naturally comes with a free hair scrunchie made from leftover material. With radical price transparency, MaisonCléo lay out exact costings for each piece to show how much care and attention goes into the crafting. We’re absolutely hooked on the slinky, day-to-night separates and cute French-girl blouses. Mum, shall we do a collab?
ARTCLUB
Approaching the fashion business in a new way, ARTCLUB is the genius of designer and artist Heidi Middleton – a want-everything online atelier for Heidi’s original paintings, prints and slow fashion creations. All limited-run pieces produced from remnant fabric, expect sweeping wide leg pants and asymmetric, after-hours midis to pair with ruffled bra tops and off-the-shoulder numbers. The whole aesthetic is elevated and unswervingly sophisticated, with a real focus on shape and material. Cutting down on waste has never looked so put-together.
&Daughter
Designing absolute favourites to be worn time and time again is key to &Daughter. Founded by Buffy Reid and her father Columba, it’s an inspired partnership, with Buffy’s fashion experience and her dad’s over 50 years in the knitwear field. Small batch, no waste production, the label dreams up knitwear from 100% natural yarns, handknitted by expert makers in the UK and Ireland. For SS20 the label has launched dresses – and such dresses. From layered trapeze designs to a tiered, collarless style, they are all about bouncy, breezy proportions. Made from organic and end-of-the-line fabrics, the dresses are locally hand-crafted in a women’s only atelier in South East London and a family-run factory in Portugal. These are the kind of pieces you’ll wear and never look back – or will, if only to admire the beautiful detailing.
