The accounts to follow to make you feel you’ve been away

Words: Beth Pratt

Lockdown. Day 9,000. Flights are grounded, borders are sealed and we’re trying to justify another trip to the supermarket because – go on, admit it – it does feel a bit exotic these days, doesn’t it? So what better time to curl up in the sunniest spot of your flat, look lovingly at your passport and cast your mind back to those heady days when you could leave your street, let alone the country. A little bit of escapism is what we need right now, so for all those who are wishing they were somewhere, anywhere, else –  we’ve got you.

For an expansive digital foray, this travelling Californian has been all over the world, and has the photos to prove it – and we’re talking breathtaking photos. Stunning underwater shots, auroras, mountains, waterfalls… every post has a different perspective on a beautiful world. Be warned: once you start scrolling, it will be hard to stop.

Italy Segreta @italysegreta

Life in Italy –  as in many, many countries – has been far from a sun-soaked paradise recently. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Italy Segreta’s #italyfromawindow has encouraged people across the country to capture authentic moments that celebrate all the beauty and culture Italy has to offer. Scrolling through their account may have us sobbing into an enormous glass of vino at the kitchen table – but it’s worth it, for dreamy, romantic European snaps so evocative you can almost feel the Mediterranean glow.

Thibåult Charpentier @hebdomania

We love the city life. While current city life has compressed to seeing our Sainsbury’s Local, the end of our road and back again, we’ve found solace scrolling the elegant urban shots of photographer Thibåult. Based in Paris, his feed captures the unswervingly beautiful simplicity of the City of Lights, but also takes in New York, Venice and more. Throwing in the odd foodie shot, consider this your own little haven of Instagram.

Travelling Whale @travelling.whale

Newcomer Travelling Whale is a soon-to-be-launched sustainable travel company. Their Instagram is filled with inspiring shots of the natural world, paired with information and links to various campaigns and companies. This is travel with a heart; ethical and passionate about protecting the beautiful world it celebrates. With their gorgeous photos of the UK, they’re proving that you don’t need to leave the country to travel well. Although apparently you do still need to leave the sofa, which, at the moment, is more of a struggle…

Accidentally Wes Anderson @accidentallywesanderson

This one’s for the travelling film buffs, and indeed anyone who wishes their life was a little bit more symmetrical. Photos are submitted from all over the world which share Wes Anderson, the film director’s, iconic aesthetic – think unusual shapes, bold colours and quirky subject matter. The buildings and landscapes featured – from Bristol to Brazil and back again – are then explained in fascinating detail below. Stylish, knowledgeable and full of personality, hit follow and never look back (or do, to take a photo of that perfectly proportioned building).
